Menefee-Dunn purchased her winning ticket for the March 19 “Carolina Cash 5” drawing at Food Lion on North Rogers Lane in Raleigh. She says she was lying in bed the next morning when she saw the winning numbers scroll across her television screen. Since Menefee-Dunn always picks her own numbers—birth dates of herself and her husband, along with one other number—she says she recognized the numbers immediately. She says she couldn’t believe what she saw, though, so she called the North Carolina Education Lottery’s (NCEL’s) automated Player Hotline to double check the numbers. She then had her husband call the same phone number to get the numbers again. And for added assurance, later that morning she stopped by a NCEL retailer and had them scan her ticket. She says she then believed that she had indeed won and came to the NCEL headquarters to claim her prize. Menefee-Dunn was excited to win the top prize and says she had driven by the NCEL headquarters building many times in the past, saying to herself, “I’m going to claim a big prize there one day!” She plans to save her winnings for retirement. Roger McDaniel II of Kinston is the lucky “Carolina Cash 5” top prize winner for the March 22 drawing. His ticket, purchased at the Kangaroo Express on Highway 258 North in Kinston, matched all five numbers drawn to win the $115,646 top prize. McDaniel claimed his prize today and said that his winnings will make a nice nest egg, but that he may also buy a new truck. He learned that his ticket was the top prize winner by checking the numbers in the newspaper. He says he was so shocked that his numbers matched that he double checked them online to make sure he’d really won. In the Saturday, March 21 Powerball drawing, three tickets matched four out of five white balls plus the Powerball and are worth $10,000 each. These tickets were sold at Market Center on Hendersonville Road in Asheville, Andy’s Pak-n-Post on Tunnel Road in Asheville, and Wilco on Highway 70 Southwest in Hickory. A total of 43,784 North Carolina Powerball players won prizes in the Saturday, March 21 Powerball drawing, ranging from $10,000 down to $3 for a total payout in prizes worth $402,414. No one matched all five white balls plus the Powerball, so the jackpot for the Wednesday, March 25 Powerball drawing is an estimated $81 million. The NCEL has paid out more than $6.2 million total in instant scratch-off ticket prizes since Thursday, March 19. Also since Thursday, “Carolina Cash 5” players have won more than $357,000 and “Carolina Pick 3” players have won more than $713,000 in prizes.
