NCEL - FIRST-TIME LOTTERY PLAYER FROM GOLDSBORO POWER PLAYS HIS WAY TO $1 MILLION
-"Carolina Cash 5" Top Prize Rolls to $426,000 for Tonight's Drawing-
RALEIGH - Joshua Best of Goldsboro had never played the lottery before, but says his coworkers always talked about playing so he decided to give it a try. He says he didn't know which scratch-off tickets to play, so he bought a Powerball ticket for the April 25 drawing. He picked his own numbers— birthdates and his wedding anniversary, along with one random number—and made sure to Power Play the ticket since he remembered his coworkers talking about how Power Playing increases any potential winnings.

Saturday night, as he was flipping through the channels on his television, he says he caught the live drawing and recognized some of the numbers. Best says he called his wife to let her know that he "may have won a few dollars." After checking the North Carolina Education Lottery's Web site the next day, though, he realized that his ticket was worth more than just a few dollars—it was worth $1 million!

Best claimed his winnings this morning at the NCEL headquarters in Raleigh. In disbelief during the claims process, he says he doesn’t have any immediate plans for the money because he needs to let it sink in. He bought his winning ticket at Hasty Mart #28 on Miller Chapel Road in Goldsboro.

In addition to Best's $1 million win, four tickets in the Saturday, April 25 Powerball drawing matched four out of five white balls plus the Powerball. Three of the four tickets were Power Played and are worth $50,000 each since the Power Play multiplier was five. These tickets were sold at Fuel Doc on South Barnes Street in Nashville, Wilco on Springs Road in Hickory, and Kroger on North Roxboro Road in Durham.

One of the four tickets that matched four out of five white balls plus the Powerball was not Power Played and is worth $10,000. This ticket was sold at Kangaroo Express on Blowing Rock Road in Boone.

A total of 36,133 North Carolina Powerball players won prizes in the Saturday, April 25 Powerball drawing, ranging from $1 million down to $3 for a total payout in prizes worth $1,530,230. No one matched all five white balls plus the Powerball to win the jackpot, so the jackpot is $65 million for the Wednesday, April 29 drawing.

The "Carolina Cash 5" top prize continues to roll! It is up to an estimated $426,000 for tonight's drawing. Players must match all five numbers drawn to win the top prize.

The North Carolina Education Lottery (NCEL) has paid out more than $5.2 million total in instant scratchoff ticket prizes since Thursday, April 23. Also since Thursday, "Carolina Cash 5" players have won more than $174,000. "Carolina Pick 4" players have won more than $350,000, and 15 tickets were sold that won the top prize of $5,000. "Carolina Pick 3" players have won more than $871,000.
