Richard Monroe of Clinton won the top prize of $102,504 playing “Carolina Cash 5.” He picked numbers that had special family significance and matched all five in the Friday, June 26 drawing. Monroe told the NCEL that after buying a new car for his wife with his winnings, he plans to take some time to relax at the pool. He purchased his top-prize winning ticket, worth $69,703.04 after taxes, at S&D Discount on Southeast Boulevard in Clinton. A Chapel Hill woman won $100,000 her first time ever playing a scratch-off ticket. Samaya Qureshi says she was shocked and excited when she scratched off the “Diamonds & Gold” ticket at home and it revealed the six-figure prize. She told the NCEL she needed her parents to look at the ticket to assure her that she had won. Qureshi purchased her winning ticket, worth $68,001.60 after taxes, at the AZ Shop N Go on Highway 70 East in Hillsborough. Gregory and Priscilla Leach split the “Carolina Cash 5” top prize of $50,000 after they matched all five numbers in the May 25 drawing. The Henderson residents told the NCEL they may decide to purchase a boat with their winnings. They purchased their ticket, worth $34,001.30 after taxes, at the Food Lion on US Highway 1 North in Youngsville. Two tickets sold in North Carolina matched four out of five white balls and the Powerball in the Saturday, June 27 drawing. One ticket sold at Talbert’s Food Mart and Grill on Highway 54 East in Graham was Power Played, making it worth $40,000 because the multiplier was four. The other ticket, sold at the Greenwood Square Food Lion in Snow Hill was not Power Played and is worth $10,000. A total of 26,206 North Carolina Powerball players won prizes in the Saturday, June 27 Powerball drawing, ranging from $40,000 to $3 for a total payout in prizes worth $399,687. Since there was one winning ticket sold in Connecticut for Saturday’s Powerball jackpot, the jackpot for the Wednesday, July 1 Powerball drawing is an estimated $20 million. The North Carolina Education Lottery (NCEL) has paid out over $5.5 million total in instant scratch-off ticket prizes since Thursday, June 25.
