“I never thought it would be me,” Smith said when she claimed her prize at the North Carolina Education Lottery (NCEL) headquarters. “But I felt like it was about time for something to happen.” The $3 million prize is paid in 20 annual installments of $150,000 (less taxes). Smith has already received her first check, which was $102,006.40 after taxes. She told lottery officials she wasn’t sure what she would do with her winnings, but that she would continue to work as an in-home health care worker. Donald Haywood and Clara Hamrick of Charlotte picked random numbers on their Powerball playslip and ended up winning $200,000 in the Oct. 14 Powerball drawing. The couple received $136,000.32 after taxes and say they plan to donate some of their winnings to charitable causes. Haywood and Hamrick bought their winning ticket at Bi-Lo on Prosperity Church Road in Charlotte. Clarence Hinton of Elizabeth City had a good weekend after winning the “Carolina Cash 5” top prize on Friday night. His ticket for the Oct. 16 drawing matched all five numbers drawn to win $194,983. Hinton says he learned of his win by checking the numbers in his local newspaper. He became overjoyed, and says he plans to provide for his family and help his church with the $132,588.76 he received after taxes. Hinton purchased his winning ticket at Elizabeth City Family Fare on U.S. 17 South in Elizabeth City. Billinda Newton of Concord plans to renovate her kitchen with her lottery winnings. “I want the Taj Ma Kitchen,” she joked when she claimed her prize. Newton won $100,000 ($68,006.40 after taxes) playing the new $20 instant scratch-off game, “$200 Million Extravaganza.” Newton says she also wants to get her nails done, take a cruise, and buy a puppy with her winnings. She purchased her winning ticket at On the Run #105 on South Union Street in Concord. In last night’s Powerball drawing, one ticket matched all five white balls and is worth $200,000! The ticket was sold at Kangaroo Express #3039 on Highway 210 North in Spring Lake. In addition, one ticket in last night’s Powerball drawing matched four out of five white balls plus the Powerball and was Power Played. Since the Power Play multiplier was two, the ticket is worth $20,000 rather than the normal $10,000. The ticket was sold at Buffalo Shoals Supermarket on Buffalo Shoals Road in Newton. A total of 33,810 North Carolina Powerball players won prizes in the Wednesday, Oct. 21 Powerball drawing ranging from $200,000 to $3 for a total payout in prizes worth $410,219. No one matched all five white balls plus the Powerball to win the jackpot, so the jackpot for the Saturday, Oct. 24 Powerball drawing is an estimated $31 million. The NCEL has paid out more than $8.3 million total in instant scratch-off ticket prizes since Monday, Oct. 19. Also since Monday, “Carolina Pick 3” players have won more than $823,000. “Carolina Pick 4” players have won more than $210,000 and 14 tickets won the top prize of $5,000. “Carolina Cash 5” players have won more than $81,000.
