-Vacationer Wins $200,000 Playing Powerball-
RALEIGH - North Carolina’s first big Powerball winner of 2010 has claimed his prize. Frederick Henry won $200,000 after his ticket matched five white balls in the Jan. 2 drawing. The High Point man told NCEL officials that he plans to invest some of his winnings into his house and donate some to charity as well. He purchased his winning ticket, worth $136,000 after taxes, at Food Lion on Brian Jordan Place in High Point.

David Romano continued to celebrate the day after his birthday, because that’s the day he became a $100,000 instant winner. The Cary man told lottery officials that he “just felt good” about the Jingle Big Ol’ Bucks ticket he purchased “on a whim.” His reaction to scratching off the prize was to say “voila.” Romano stated that he plans to make home improvements, put some money into savings, and is considering taking a trip with his prize. He bought his winning ticket, worth $68,001 after taxes, at the Kangaroo on North Harrison Avenue in Cary.

To ring in 2010, Alvis Darby was spending time with family in North Carolina when he decided to buy a Powerball ticket that turned out to be worth $200,000. The ticket he purchased at Food Lion on West William Street in Apex matched five white balls in the Dec. 30 drawing. The Trenton, NJ man told NCEL officials that he plans to deposit his winnings immediately, which were an after-tax amount of $136,000. Darby said he wants his family and friends to share in his good fortune, and plans to buy a house.

A total of 28,588 North Carolina Powerball players won prizes in the Wednesday, Jan. 6 Powerball drawing ranging from $3 to $200 for a total payout in prizes worth $155,376. Because no tickets matched all five white balls and the Powerball, the jackpot for the Saturday, Jan. 9 Powerball drawing is an estimated $25 million.

The North Carolina Education Lottery (NCEL) has paid out over $4.6 million total in instant scratch-off ticket prizes since Monday, Jan. 4. Also since Monday, “Carolina Pick 3” players have won over $727,000, “Carolina Pick 4” players have won $139,000, and “Carolina Cash 5” players have won over $97,000.
