RALEIGH - A Carolina Beach woman said she was in disbelief after she scratched off a half-million dollar prize playing a $500,000 Jackpot instant game. Sandra Lunsford realized she won the top prize at home after purchasing the ticket at Sea Merchants on Cape Fear Boulevard in Carolina Beach. She told NCEL officials she plans to take a trip to Niagara Falls with her winnings, which totaled $340,003 after taxes.

Lunsford is the second big prize winner in Carolina Beach in less than a month. Toni Lyons won $100,000 on a Jingle Big Ol’ Bucks ticket. On December 21 Lyons claimed her prize, which was $68,001 after taxes. She had purchased the ticket at the Scotchman on Canal Drive in Carolina Beach.

A Charlotte man told NCEL officials he was shocked to discover he won $349,222 after his ticket matched all five numbers in the Jan. 10 “Carolina Cash 5” drawing. Carlos Sanders purchased his top prize-winning ticket at the Petro Express on South Tryon Street in Charlotte. In addition to investing his winnings, Sanders said that he planned to buy a house with his winnings, which totaled $237,471 after taxes.

A group of 14 coworkers in Surry County claimed a $200,000 Powerball prize after their ticket matched all five white balls in the Jan. 9 drawing. Danny Vaughn of Mount Airy said that none of the other group members believed him when he told them they had won. Vaughn had purchased the winning ticket for the group at the Zip Food Store on North Andy Griffith Parkway in Mount Airy. The claimants, whose individual after-tax winnings are $9,414 each, told NCEL officials they planned to do various things with their prize money, ranging from vacationing to placing the money into college savings for their family.

A Guilford County woman said she and her husband plan to buy a house after she became a $200,000 Powerball winner. Karen Albright of Pleasant Garden matched all five white balls in the Jan. 13 drawing. She purchased her winning ticket, worth $135,820 after taxes, at the Get & Go on NC Highway 62 East in Climax.

A woman from Fayetteville is now a $118,343 “Carolina Cash 5” winner! Marsitta Butler told NCEL officials she is still in a state of disbelief after her ticket matched all five numbers in the Jan. 14 drawing. She purchased her winning ticket, worth $80,473 after taxes, at the Short Stop on Murchison Road in Fayetteville.

Pick 3 players were “seeing triple” Friday night after the numbers 8-8-8 came up in the Jan. 15 evening drawing of “Carolina Pick 3.” A total of over $2.1 million in cash prizes were paid out for that drawing!

A Powerball ticket matched four out of five white balls and the Powerball in the Saturday, Jan. 16 drawing, making it worth $10,000. The ticket was sold at the Scotchman on Old State Road in Williamston (Martin County).

A total of 39,024 North Carolina Powerball players won prizes in the Saturday, Jan. 16 Powerball drawing ranging from $3 to $10,000 for a total payout in prizes worth $405,620. Because no tickets matched all five white balls and the Powerball, the jackpot for the Wednesday, Jan. 20 Powerball drawing is an estimated $51 million.

The North Carolina Education Lottery (NCEL) has paid out over $7.6 million total in instant scratch-off ticket prizes since Thursday, Jan. 14. Also since Thursday, “Carolina Pick 3” players have won over $3.2 million, “Carolina Pick 4” players have won more than $260,000, and 11 tickets won the top prize of $5,000. “Carolina Cash 5” players have won over $384,695.
