A High Point woman is a $200,000 Powerball winner after her ticket matched all five white balls in the Wednesday, Jan. 20 drawing. Clara Matheny told NCEL officials that she was shocked to realize she won after checking her numbers online. She purchased her winning ticket, worth $136,000 after taxes, at the Food Lion on South Hawthorne Road in Winston-Salem. Daniel Sbrocco of Jacksonville said he was “speechless” after winning $100,000 instantly on a Mustang Fever scratch-off game. He told lottery officials that, last Wednesday, he needed to get some change and decided to buy two Mustang Fever tickets at the Verona Quik Mart on Wilmington Highway in Jacksonville. Sbrocco said that he scratched off the top prize of $100,000 at home and that his wife did not believe him. He also told NCEL officials that, in addition to setting money aside for his daughter’s college fund, he planned to purchase “a couple of new fishing rods.” Sbrocco’s winnings totaled $68,001 after taxes. Two Powerball tickets sold in North Carolina were big winners in the Saturday, Jan. 23 drawing. One ticket, sold at Lowe’s Foods on New Garden Road in Greensboro, is worth $20,000 because it matched four out of five white balls and the Powerball, was Power Played, and the multiplier was two. Another ticket matched four out of five white balls and the Powerball but was not Power Played, and is worth $10,000. That ticket was sold at the Fastop Food Shop on Greenwood Road in Lemon Springs (Lee County). A total of 43,656 North Carolina Powerball players won prizes in the Saturday, Jan. 23 Powerball drawing ranging from $3 to $20,000 for a total payout in prizes worth $269,459. Because no tickets matched all five white balls and the Powerball, the jackpot for the Wednesday, Jan. 27 Powerball drawing is an estimated $76 million. The North Carolina Education Lottery (NCEL) has paid out over $6.2 million total in instant scratch-off ticket prizes since Thursday, Jan. 21. Also since Thursday, “Carolina Pick 3” players have won over $732,000, “Carolina Pick 4” players have won more than $215,000 and 13 tickets won the top prize of $5,000. “Carolina Cash 5” players have won over $536,000.
