Griffin and his wife Loretta made the trip to lottery headquarters in Raleigh today to claim their prize. At a news conference, Griffin told reporters that he “felt fantastic” and that the prize money will allow him to “play more golf.” He also said he plans to spend more time with his family and possibly take a trip to Hawaii. The Asheville retiree told reporters that after buying gas at the Wilco on Smokey Park Highway in Asheville, he had $5 left over and decided to purchase some lottery tickets. He let the computer pick his numbers. The retailer is eligible for the $50,000 retailer incentive for selling the jackpot winning ticket. Griffin is the third Powerball jackpot winner from North Carolina since the game was introduced in May 2006. He elected to take the lump sum payment which is approximately $69 million (approximately $47 million after federal and state withholdings). In addition to the $141 million winning ticket, there were several additional big winning Powerball tickets sold in North Carolina for the Saturday, Feb. 6 drawing including a ticket worth $1 million! Jaqueline Bivens of Cherryville bought a ticket that matched all five white balls, and because it was Power Played, it is worth $1 million. She told NCEL officials that she was still in disbelief. She shared her winnings with her husband and said they plan to deposit the money in the bank immediately. The Bivens’ individual after-tax prize amounts were $340,000 apiece. She purchased the winning ticket at Kingsway on East Main Street in Lincolnton. The retailer is eligible for the $10,000 retailer incentive for selling the winning ticket. A Powerball ticket sold at Candy’s Exxon on Carolina Beach Road in Wilmington matched four white balls and the Power Ball in the Saturday, Feb. 6 drawing. The ticket is worth $30,000 because it was Power Played and the multiplier was three. Another ticket matched four out of five white balls and the Powerball but was not Power Played, making it worth $10,000. It was sold at Food Lion on Old Mountain Road in Statesville. A Jacksonville man said he was stunned to become a $200,000 Powerball winner after his ticket matched all five white balls in the Feb. 3 drawing. Troy Price told NCEL officials he planned to deposit his winnings in the bank and put them toward college savings. He purchased his winning ticket, worth $136,000 after taxes, at the Handee Hugo on Western Boulevard in Jacksonville. Aside from the $141 million winning ticket, a total of 49,891 North Carolina Powerball players won prizes in the Saturday, Feb. 6 Powerball drawing ranging from $3 to $1,000,000 for a total payout in prizes worth over $1.3 million. Because the Powerball jackpot prize was won, the jackpot amount for the Wednesday, Feb. 10 Powerball drawing is $20 million. A total of 9,860 North Carolina Mega Millions players won prizes in the Friday, Feb. 5 Mega Millions drawing ranging from $3 to $600 for a total payout in prizes worth $77,960. Because no tickets matched all five white balls and the Mega Ball, the jackpot for the Tuesday, Feb. 9 Mega Millions drawing is an estimated $32 million. Tickets first went on sale for Mega Millions on Sunday, Jan. 31. Mega Millions drawings are held Tuesday and Friday nights. The North Carolina Education Lottery (NCEL) has paid out over $7.4 million total in instant scratch-off ticket prizes since Thursday, Feb. 4. Also since Thursday, “Carolina Pick 3” players have won over $1.6 million, “Carolina Pick 4” players have won more than $316,000 and 11 tickets won the top prize of $5,000. “Carolina Cash 5” players have won over $284,000.
