““I couldn’t believe it. I still can’t believe it,” she said. “I’m a mother’s girl and when my mom said,’I won,’ I said, ‘We won.’” McNeill is a regular lottery player whose favorite game is “Carolina Cash 5.” She plans to use her winnings, worth $258,728 after taxes, to pay bills, purchase a new car for herself and her mother and share with her family. The ticket, which matched all five white balls, was sold at Quick Check on 5th Street in Lumberton. James Rice of Candler in Buncombe County matched five white balls but not the Mega Ball in the Aug. 17 Mega Millions drawing and won $250,000. The ticket was purchased at the Energy Mart Store on Long Shoals Road in Arden. “It was a great blessing, for sure,” Rice said of his win. He plans to use his winnings, worth $170,000 after taxes, to pay off bills. A total of 8,321 North Carolina players won prizes in the Tuesday, Aug. 31 Mega Millions drawing, ranging from $2 to $450 for a total payout in prizes of $57,097. The jackpot for the Friday, Sept. 3 drawing is an estimated $16 million if taken as an annuity or $11.1 million if the lump-sum payment is chosen. A $1 million winning ticket sold in Matthews from the Aug. 20 drawing has yet to be claimed. In the Powerball drawing held on Wednesday, Sept. 1, a total of 27,272 players won prizes ranging from $3 to $30,000 for a total payout in prizes of $228,416. One Powerplay ticket sold in North Carolina matched four white balls and the Power Ball and, since the multiplier was three, is worth $30,000. The ticket was sold at Rushco Food Stores #5 on Jake Alexander Boulevard in Salisbury. Because no ticket matched all six balls in the drawing, the jackpot for the Saturday, Sept. 4 drawing is $47 million if taken as an annuity or $26.5 million as a lump-sum payment. The North Carolina Education Lottery has paid out more than $3.5 million in instant scratch-off ticket prizes since Monday, Aug. 30. “Carolina Pick 3” players have won more than $1.4 million. “Carolina Pick 4” players have won more than $233,000 including eight tickets that won the top prize of $5,000. “Carolina Cash 5” players have won more than $488,000.
