Michael Cox of La Grange said he had to do a double take after he bought a 100X The Cash scratch-off ticket and won $100,000.

The truck driver bought the $20 ticket at Johnny’s Convenient Mart on N.C. 111 South in Goldsboro on his way to work.

“I couldn’t believe it,” Cox said. “I had to have a coworker double check it to make sure my eyes weren’t playing tricks on me.”

Cox claimed the prize Monday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. After required state and federal tax withholdings, he took home $70,756. He plans to use some of the money to get a 2015 Suburban he’s “had his eye on.”

Players can enter their “X The Cash” scratch-off tickets into one of four second-chance drawings for a chance to win $50,000. The deadline to enter the first drawing is March 31.

Ticket sales from games like 100X The Cash make it possible for the lottery to raise more than $650 million a year for education. For details on how $3.7 million in lottery funds made a difference in Lenoir County last year, click on the “Impact” section of the lottery’s website.
