Thirty years ago, William Halk met the love of his life at the Handy Pantry on Dallas Cherryville Highway. This November, the lucky store also provided Halk with a Mega Millions prize of $40,000.
Halk was the top winner in North Carolina for the Nov. 7 Mega Millions drawing and one of only three who won $40,000 in the nation.
“I bought the ticket where I met my wife 30 years ago.” said Halk. “On our wedding anniversary.”
Halk said the timing and place of the win made him “almost cry.”
Halk claimed his prize at the lottery’s regional office and claim center in Charlotte. After required state and federal tax withholdings, he took home $27,801.
The auto-parts salesman plans to put a new engine in his truck, pay for a trip in December and save the rest of the money.
The Mega Millions estimated jackpot has now reached $106 million, $66.4 million cash, for Tuesday’s drawing.
Ticket sales from games like Mega Millions make it possible for the lottery to raise more than $600 million a year for education.
Congratulations William!
