Nash County woman to get dream home with $427,896 Cash 5 jackpot

Jewel Thorne of Spring Hope said she plans to buy her dream home after winning a $427,896 Cash 5 jackpot.

“I’m finally going to get my own house,” Thorne said. “It’s a wonderful feeling to know I won’t have to pay rent. Plus, I’ll be able to make sure it’s handicapped accessible so my husband can get around.”

Thorne’s good fortune started when she stopped at the Stop N Shop on East Nash Street in Spring Hope and bought a Cash 5 ticket for the Nov. 27 drawing. She watched the live drawing later that night.

“I was surprised when I heard the numbers,” Thorne said. “I was like, ‘Wait a minute, I know those numbers.’”

She checked her ticket and sure enough, she beat odds of one in 962,598 to win the jackpot.

“I just couldn’t believe it,” Thorne said. “I was so excited.”

Thorne claimed the prize Friday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. After required state and federal tax withholdings, she took home $301,671. Thorne also plans to make a donation to her church.

Cash 5 is a statewide draw game that gives players the chance to win a jackpot every single night. Tickets cost $1 and players can buy tickets at most lottery retailers or through Online Play on the lottery’s website.

NCEL I have something to say to you guys it's not luck to win anything it's skill the more people play the less people win you can sit there and tell me that it's all luck but when you look at the odds of each ticket you have a better chance of getting hit by lightning then winning anything big I've played and played and never won anything but my money back never won anything on the drawings or second chance and also nothing on the cash 5 ez match especially when I bought 5 different cash 5 tickets all with different numbers on them for the ez match numbers and guess what only $2.00 I won back now idk what kind of odds you guys are looking at but I think you guys are cheating the tickets you guys know what tickets have the highest payouts and you guys want them to be close as possible to you more money in the governments pocket when I see a lot other winning more in other countries and other states it makes want to leave this state play somewhere else.

Hey Kisha, Sorry to hear you aren't having more luck. Just like with other types of lottery drawings, the more entries you have in a second-chance drawing, the more chances you have to win. But your odds will vary between drawings since that depends on the number of total entries a single drawing receives. Some drawings can have over a million total entries. Remember, having just one entry in a drawing gives you a shot to win. Good luck!

@Schmeka: Not necessarily. There will statistically be a lot more winners only if there are more entries (assuming they are distributed randomly). Once the jackpot gets that high, there should be an increase of entries. That's why there's a winner. From NC Lottery's point of view, having at least ONE winner is almost a guarantee at that point. But from ONE individual's point of view, the odd's are still the same, unless you choose to play more numbers. The fact that it was a Quick Pick shows that there's little difference between numbers that are chosen by the machine vs. you choosing it - as long as they aren't 1, 2, 3, 4, 5... In practice, your sequence of 14, 21, 22, 27, 37 has a better chance... Good luck.NC Lottery
You make a great point, Brian, but one important distinction is that 1-2-3-4-5 and 14-21-22-27-37 have the exact same chance of being drawn, but 1-2-3-4-5 probably has a better chance of you having to split the jackpot if you were to win.

Hey Schmeka, Each drawing is an independent event, meaning it doesn't matter what your numbers were for the previous drawings, that you choose the same numbers every day or this is the first time, or if you went with a Quick Pick. Your chances of matching all five numbers will still be one in 962,598. If your numbers were drawn today, the chance of them being drawn tomorrow is still one in 962,598. Same with any other combination of numbers. We're not sure where you got those numbers, but we wish you luck.
