On Friday evening, Bradley Yates of Danbury stopped to get a Cheerwine and walked away with a $100,000 lottery prize.
“I was on my way home from work and wanted something to drink,” said Yates, who works at a plumbing supply store.
He stopped by Barham Grocery on U.S. 158 in Summerfield to quench his thirst. While there, he bought a $4,000,000 Platinum Payout scratch-off. He took the ticket back to his car.
“I had to look at it two or three times,” Yates said. “I couldn’t believe it! I had the lottery app, so I took out my phone to scan the ticket. When it said, ‘Claim at lottery headquarters,’ I knew it was real.”
Smartphone users can download the NC Lottery Official Mobile App and scan a ticket to see if it is a winner.
Yates claimed his prize Monday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. After required state and federal tax withholdings, he took home $70,507. He plans to use some of the money to pay medical bills.
The $20 ticket launched in September 2016 with three $4 million prizes, five $1 million prizes, and 12 $100,000 prizes. One $4 million prize, one $1 million prize, and three $100,000 prizes remain.
