This graduation season, the Crowder family of Durham has a lot to celebrate.
As of last month, Kimberly Crowder, a lottery scholarship recipient, is a proud graduate of Wake Tech with a degree in accounting. But the one thing that makes her even more proud is watching her children succeed. This month, her daughter will walk across the stage at her high school graduation with a degree in hand. As a mom, seeing her children succeed and watching their dreams come true makes her journey worth it.
“When I first went back to school in 2001,” said Crowder, “ my youngest son was just a newborn, so I had four children, ages five and under, when I received my first degree. It wasn’t easy. But it was for my children and for their future. I want them to think, ‘If Mom can do it, we can go back and do it, too.’
Crowder is a living success story, proving that anyone can achieve their dreams with a little hard work and determination. This graduation season, we wanted to be part of the celebration by sharing inspiring stories of lottery scholarship recipients.
Here’s Kimberly Crowder’s story:
In 2001, Crowder attended Wake Tech for the first time as a young mother, graduating with a degree in business management. Over the next 15 years, she found her passion in human resources and helping others succeed.
When she was laid off in 2016, Crowder found her way back to Wake Tech. But this time, she knew exactly what she wanted to do and where she wanted to go.
Fast forward to this year. Crowder has two children in college. They needed needing books and money for daily expenses. She worried she wouldn’t have enough to cover her expenses too. That’s why she says the lottery scholarship was such a blessing for her and her family.
“When I saw the award amount,” said Crowder. “I was speechless. It helped out tremendously. It took a big burden off of us because I just didn’t know how we were going to do it. But we were able to accomplish it this semester!”
Congratulations to all of this year’s high school and college graduates.
