With $200,000 win, Hillsborough retiree looks forward to new house, new car

Glenn Elliott of Hillsborough says a $200,000 lottery prize will help him buy a home and a car he’s been dreaming of since childhood.

“I’m working on buying a house,” said Elliott. “So this will help with that down payment. But I’ve been dreaming about an older sports car since I was a kid. Just have never been able to get one.”

The retired state employee bought one Carolina Cash ticket late Thursday afternoon from Eagles on Hampton Point Boulevard in Hillsborough. He scratched the ticket in the store – no win. Deciding to try his luck once more, he bought a second $5 ticket and won big.

“I knew I was a winner,” said Elliott recalling the moment. “But I still had to keep looking at it! I eventually brought it up to the cashier and said, ‘I think I won something.’ And then they started hollering when I said, ‘I think it’s $200,000!’”

Elliott claimed his prize Monday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. After required state and federal tax withholdings, he took home $141,003.

“I’m thinking I’m going to get either a Mustang or Camaro,” said Elliott. “You can’t go wrong with either.”

Elliott claimed the last of three top prizes in the game so the lottery will being the process of ending it. All second-chance prizes will be awarded. The next second-chance drawing is scheduled for Sept. 5.

I am guessing 9. Cash5 & LL are my 2 favorite draw games. When are you gonna run that combo promo again. Not the works. I think it was buy a $4 LL ticket get a cash5 for free.NC Lottery

Wow, I see we had another cash5 online winner last night. I don't remember seeing that being stated before (online), just the names of the city. Thanks for adding that so we don't have to wonder. Good afternoon, Zachary. The odds in Colossal Cash apply to the whole game, not 12 tickets in a row. Remember when you play the lottery, it takes luck to beat the odds. The prize money to pay all the prizes in the game come from the non-winning tickets. There's only a chance to win — never a guarantee. The lottery hopes people play for fun. When it isn't fun, that's a sign it's time to take a break.

The drawing dates and entry deadlines are subject to change at the sole discretion of the NCEL. Any changes will be announced by the NCEL at least seven (7) calendar days prior to the scheduled entry deadline date via the NCEL's official website (www.nclottery.com). So if the dates are always tentative, move the 4th/last drawing date up dramatically, or just award 4 winners in the 3rd drawing scheduled for Sept. 5th ???

Hello Jackie W, You do have the option of entering your losing tickets into the second chance drawings. You have the same chance of winning on the second chance drawings as someone going into the trash and getting your losing tickets or some store clerks entering the winning tickets left at the stores. Give it a shot. You may have better luck with the second chance drawings.

Congratulations to you. Hope I can win something some day. Have purchased 10 (actually more) of the $30 Colossal Cash tickets and not won a thing. This is so disheartening, especially when you pay for yours and others are going in trash cans to log these in and winning. I wish there was a way this could be stopped, my money is just as valuable too.
