$1 million prize means an Outer Banks retirement for West Virginia couple

Michelle and Dennis Woolwine of Charles Town, West Virginia are dreaming of life on the Outer Banks after they won a $1 million Powerball prize.

“It’s always been a dream of ours to retire to the Outer Banks,” Michelle said. “It’s our spot. We vacation there every year.”

“This is just incredible,” Dennis said. “Now that we won, we can do this. We can actually invest in our dreams.”

The couple’s good fortune happened during their vacation when they stopped at the Circle K on South Croatan Highway in Kill Devil Hills.

“We were on the way to check into the beach house when the gas light on my car came on,” Dennis said. “I went inside to get a drink and decided I’d also get a lottery ticket. I don’t normally play, but since we were in our paradise I figured I’d start dreaming.”

Dennis bought a $2 Powerball ticket for the July 13, drawing. He found out he won the next morning.

“I felt like the breath got sucked out of me,” Dennis said. “I looked at the ticket at least 50 times.”

“When he showed me the ticket I couldn’t believe it,” Michelle said. “I started screaming I was so excited.”

They claimed the prize Friday morning at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. After required state and federal tax withholdings, they took home $707,501. In addition to saving for retirement, they plan to set up college funds for their two children.

“I have goosebumps,” Dennis said when he got the check. “It still doesn’t feel real.”

The ticket matched the numbers on the five white balls to win $1,000,000.  It beat odds of one in 11.7 million.

The jackpot for Saturday’s Powerball drawing is $75 million or $49.1 million cash.

Ticket sales from draw games like Powerball make it possible for the lottery to raise more than $650 million a year for the state. For details on how lottery funds made a difference in all of North Carolina’s 100 counties, click on the “Impact” section of the lottery’s website.

You must have NOT taken state taxes out for them.....they took home $ 707,501 yet when a NC person wins a million dollars they take home $ 424,500......$ 283,001 is a big difference.....just sayingNC Lottery
Hi Thomas, on our scratch-offs with $1 million prizes, the winners are given the choice between a $1 million payment paid out over 20 years, or a lump sum of $600,000. The $400,000 difference between the lump sum and the annuity would be earned on interest over the course of 20 years and used to pay out the $1 million prize to the winner. Players that win $1 million on Powerball receive $1 million as a lump sum, there is no annuity option.

thanks Kelli and Stephanie, Kelli, winners pages shows ( page 6) someone won at the Han-Dee Hugo # 57, Raleigh, NC . July 3rd I think. Will be in Charlotte soon, headed toward the airport. lol

Tony T. I sent the lottery an email about the Crown Jewels card just this week. They said they couldn't tell me specific stores that it is sold at. Does anyone know anywhere in Raleigh or Clayton that still sells this one? Since the newer (big) MGM card came out most places are selling that one. There's still some big prizes left on this one.

Congratualations on your winning. I would like to respond to the negative person who seems to be angry about your winnings. If I win any money from the lottery no one will make me feel guilty because somebody might not have food on their table. Learn to be happy for others and maybe, just maybe, one day you'll be blessed as well.

Kelly R.- It doesn't look like food or a roof is a problem for these winners so I don't know what your comment means. Do you mean they should give away the money they won? Or do you mean that only people in need should be able to play/win lottery games? Whatever you meant by your comment I'm pretty sure it's not any of our business what they choose to do with their money.

NC Lottery, what happens when someone out of state wins lottery in NC as far as state taxes? Will they be paying taxes in both states? I think they do but just checking. Will you be withholding state taxes from both states or just NC?NC Lottery
Hi Srinivasa, we are only required to withhold the minimum federal and NC state tax amount from all big prizes. If a winner lives in a different state we would suggest they speak to a tax professional to find out how that would affect their tax situation.

To Kelly. I do not understand the concept of your comment. The 2 things you mentioned do not have anything to do with each other. I live on a fixed income but still manage to go to the beach every year. Whether someone else can not afford to put food on their table has nothing to do with my vacation or retirement plans.

7/26/2019 04:48 - Tony T.

congrats ! Is their money to spend as they choose, enjoy/use it winners... however it suits you ! Question for anyone who will answer, can you find the $ 10.00 Crown Jewels tickets? Have looked in 6 different towns in diff. parts of the state during my work travels, can't find them anywhere I've checked. Clerks say they haven't seen that game in a while but it's showing still active here. Searched 20 pages of winners here and only found 2 that have won as of late .

When they were on their way to check in to the beach house? I understand this lottery thing but I think that there is people that need to put food on the table and a roof over their head before they consider retiring on the ocean that they go to every year!!
