Union County woman wins $418,302 Cash 5 jackpot

Kathy Lilly of Monroe is celebrating her good fortune after she won a $418,302 Cash 5 jackpot.

Lilly bought a Quick Pick ticket for Thursday’s drawing at the S.P.I. Express 3 on Sikes Mill Road in Monroe.

She claimed her prize Tuesday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. After required state and federal tax withholdings, she took home $295,949. Her ticket beat odds of one in 962,598 to win the jackpot.

Cash 5 is a statewide draw game that gives players the chance to win a jackpot every single night. Tickets cost $1 and players can buy tickets at most lottery retailers or through Online Play on the lottery’s website. The jackpot for tonight’s drawing is $100,000.

Ticket sales from draw games like Cash 5 make it possible for the lottery to raise more than $650 million a year for education. Ok let me make this simple if I hit a pick 4 number for 2500 can no lottery take out state and federal taxes instead of taking out the state and leaving it up to me to file federal taxes on this 2500 the reason why I ask because I heard that if it’s under 10,000 that the nc lottery only take out state taxes not federal NC Lottery
Hi Coriante, The lottery will only withhold the minimum required by law. In your case, we would be required to withhold state taxes since it was a win under $5,000. Any additional withholdings would be up to you to account for, which is why we encourage all winners to consult a tax professional.

The second part to that question is if I win 2500 dollars and nc lottery normally takes out just state taxes and leave it up to me to file federal taxes at the beginning of the year can I disregard that and ask nc lottery to take out state and federal on my winnings under 10,000 dollars NC Lottery

TAXES???? if by chance you have to file taxes in two or more states (i have NC & SC) they will balance out and you will end up paying taxes in one state. BUT you still have to file in order to get credit for each state. Hope that helps. A Tax accountant will help you decide which one to file first. this is just what i experienced. something like this i always use an accountant.

@darryl My scanner wouldn't work because I didn't allow the site to access my pictures and microphone! Once I opted don't allow then it wouldn't let me scan. I just didn't understand why NCEL wanted to gain such access to my personal pics and my microphone.....hope that helps buddyNC Lottery
Hi Juan, The app will require access to your camera in order to scan your ticket, but shouldn't need access to photos or a microphone. If you don't want to allow access, you could enter manually. Good luck on your tickets!

Hi Kevin, We have not changed our Lucke-Rewards point system lately. Instant tickets are worth between one and 10 times the ticket price in reward points so that makes a $5 instant ticket worth between 5 and 50 points.

Hey Kevin, Our latest numbers showed that the Powerball New Year's Rocking' Eve drawing had 28,268 entries. There's still time to submit your entries today, so that number is not final. We're not sure what you're asking about the scratch-offs. We have not changed our Lucke-Rewards point system lately. Instant tickets are worth between one and 10 times the ticket price in reward points so that makes a $5 instant ticket worth between 5 and 50 points.

Can you request that nc lottery take out state and federal taxes even if it’s under 5000 dollars and can you see if there will be chance for some other lottery headquarters to cash winning tickets over 100,000 instead of people having to drive to Raleigh NC NC Lottery
Hi Coriante, The lottery will only withhold the minimum taxes required. If you were to win a big prize and wanted to make sure you had saved enough of it come tax time, we highly recommend you speak with a tax professional so they can help you be prepared. Right now we do not have any plans to allow winners to claim prizes of above $100,000 at other lottery offices. Generally, our big winners don't mind making the drive to get their prize. :)
