Video: Players win big in July

Players across the state claimed twenty prizes of $100,000 or more in July including eight $1 million prizes and one $1 million second-chance prize.

It’s every player’s dream to win the lottery. We love meeting them and learning about how they plan to celebrate their big win.

Here’s a look at some of the folks we met this month:

Hi Tina! Yes, yesterday's second-chance drawings were held as scheduled. When winners are selected in second-chance drawings they are typically notified by email within 48 hours. So for a drawing held on a Wednesday, winners can expect a message by 5 p.m. Friday. Best of luck to you!

Why is the "second chances" drawing for 100x and 30,000,000 that i have entered in is saying expired but the drawing isn't till 08/07/2019...is the winners already picked? I hope I'm the biggest winner!NC Lottery

I have an uncle that won $50,000 on $100 loaded scratch off.i took him to cash it in in charlotte.they gave a check for $36,000 after taxes.is he still going to have to pay taxes on it again at the end of the year?thxNC Lottery
Hi Eddie, Congrats to your uncle! The lottery will only withhold the minimum state and federal taxes at the time a winner claims their prize. We do recommend that winners meet with a tax professional after claiming their prize to ensure there are no surprises come tax time.

What if you win $600 on something like 1112 by playing either 50 cent ANY or 50/50? That's $600, correct? So the winner would have to go to Raleigh for only $600. What do they actually get?NC Lottery
Hi Tim, Prizes of $600 don’t need to be claimed at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. A $600 prize can be claimed at a lottery regional office. The prize is subject to state tax which is currently 5.499%.That amount will vary if tax rates change. Thanks and good luck!

Can you explain when it shows 2 or 3 draws. Does it require me to do something else?NC Lottery
Hi Roger, If you are asking about a multi-draw ticket, then yes it does change the process just a little. If you have a win, say on the first drawing, and still have drawings left on your ticket, you will need to get an exchange ticket when you claim your winnings. In this way, you can get your winnings right away and still have your ticket for your future drawings. Hope that was the information you were looking for, good luck!

@NC LOTTERY, in reference to what you're saying about the wallet, do you tell the winner that they've won X amount, but then in their wallet, they actually have a smaller amount, minus taxes? If so, do you even take taxes out for prizes under $500? A 50/50 win, for example, is either $290 or $330. Let's say the winner bought the ticket at a convenience store but cashes it in at the IGA. If they won EXACT, it could be $500 if they paid a dollar. Anyway, my point is, the winner can claim the winnings tax-free AND anonymously. I'm sure you know this. I know you don't have Pick 3 online yet but suppose I win a few hundred bucks on one of the eligible games, like Powerball. Are you going to tax the $500 or whatever it is, even though I could claim a physical ticket TAX-FREE?NC Lottery
Hi Tim, State taxes are not paid on prize amounts under $599. Whether you choose to play online or at a retail location it will be the same. Good luck to you!

Then, you will need to provide additional info to upgrade your account for Online Play. Many of our popular draw style games are available for play. We will send you an email notification and wins under $600 will be automatically deposited into your wallet. If you win an amount greater than $600, you will receive an email notification with instructions on how to claim. One of the great benefits of playing online is that you get an email informing you if you've won something! Just make sure you keep your contact info up to date.

Hi Peggy, Whether you purchase a ticket at a store or play via subscription, you have the same chance to win a prize. The VAST majority of lottery tickets are still sold at retail locations. We do have winners through subscription purchases, but the number of subscription players is very, very small compared to the vast amount of tickets that are sold in stores. However you might decide to play, we wish you luck!
