Video: Marine Corps veteran wins first “Extreme” $10 million prize

Monte Hukill of High Point and his wife, Gage, are the first players to win the top prize of $10 million in the Extreme Millions scratch-off game.

Hukill, a Marine Corps veteran, stopped by the Fairway One Stop on Greensboro Road in High Point and bought an Extreme Millions scratch-off ticket, returning home to watch Thursday Night Football.

“I would scratch a number and then look back at the game,” said Hukill. “I wasn’t really paying attention. But that sure did change.”

When Hukill realized he was a winner, he called out to his wife.

“I walked over to the stairs and yelled, ‘Hey honey, you might want to come down here,’” said Hukill recalling the moment.

Gage instinctively ran downstairs thinking something was wrong.

“My first initial thought was the kids,” said Gage, a high school English teacher. “But it wasn’t the kids! He showed me this ticket and I just thought, ‘No way. Things like this just don’t happen to ordinary people like us.’”

Putting the lucky ticket on the nightstand, the Hukills tried to sleep through the night.

“I think I slept with one eye open,” said Hukill. “Because I knew I had won, I just knew it.”

Hukill had the choice of taking a $10 million annuity that has 20 payments of $500,000 a year or a lump sum of $6 million. Hukill chose the lump sum and, after required state and federal tax withholdings, took home $4,170,069. He plans on using the money to help his two kids pay for college and pay off his wife’s student loan debt.

@Charnell Im with you!I've been playing for years, and I've never won much of anything. I even had a lottery official who was refilling a lottery machine to tell me she had brand new tickets going in and I should give it a try. I told her no because that's not a guaranteed win. She said give it a try I bet you'll win something. I put my money in for a $20 ticket and of course I went absolutely nothing she hands me a free t-shirt. I think the lottery is a rip-off and according to who you are and where you live that's how you win!??

I believe you guys be setting the people who work for nc lottery to win. I drove all over nc looking for a winner and cant find it. Everyone who won big is close to Ralige or look like they been paid off to lie and say they won the lottery. This is a rip off! Why cant people close to Elizabeth City or Moyock win! NC Lottery

I remember the days that the lottery was fun I remember the days when the lottery wasn't so greedy I remember the days you could win on $2 ticket now it's all about to 10 and $20 tickets your greed is taking all the fun out of the game for me I can't spend 10 20 I have yet to find a 50 on the frenzy ticket I have not found a price on a $2 ticket

Just wanting to know how many people be in the Lucke-Rewards drawings? Because if it's millions of people the there isn't a need to submit entries for something that millions of people are entering. I don't stand a chance and it's like nobody really ever wins from my city I'm just saying it's like the more smaller towns or cities get all the winners. LZ members, don't waste your time asking about the new website or mobile app. LZ announced that a new website and mobile app were in the works on Sept 29, 2016. In that blog LZ wrote "As we mentioned in the blog, a feature that tells you whether or not you have a winning ticket is coming your way in the coming months. As we get closer to it coming out, we'll have more details for you." We'll it's been over a year and we are no closer to getting the website or app updated. It seems the focus is on messing with things like your total points and points history instead of doing what customers want, like the running total of entries in the reward and second chance contests, a consolidated web site and an updated mobile app. The blog should have said "in the coming years..."NC Lottery
We plan to have the new app and website out by the end of the year. We've taken player feedback and implemented it into the new site and app to create a better user experience.

Hi Navygold2002! The winner had the choice of taking an annuity payment that would pay him $500,000 a year for 20 years or he could take a lump sum of $6 million. He chose the lump sum, so after state and federal taxes he received just over $4.1 million.

Thank you NC lottery , finally designing a non pyramid sratch ticket .The "$50 or$100 " scratch ticket give us players a choice in playing sratch tickets .The big bucks not always needed in making a lottery system successful and making players happy . Observed winner of the of said scratch ticket at grocery store buying steak vs chicken .Guess what , he also purchased school supplies for his children .He was a happy lottery player spending money . Inasmuch this type of spending should also be good for the state of North Carolina .I glad someone in the lottery is listening to us the player .I myself summited a similar suggestion months ago .

Well that's an interesting story. Claim the prize, but don't announce it until they (or NCEL) are ready...mmmm. Lottery players don't necessarily care "who" won but where and when tickets were sold. The winner, retailer and claimed date could have been published without pics or videos Friday or Saturday and the follow up PR.

I play the odds at casino tables. And, I have played scratchers. Statistically, these are horrible odds because the tickets don’t match the odds stated on the tickets. Point: the 30 tickets. Odds are 1/3. Whatever. They don’t deliver consistently to what is stated. And, the second chance winnings mean nothing because ticket brokers scan tickets like they were players. Beware the system. Buying multiple tickets is never a guarantee of winning. Sometimes it just takes one ticket to win. All instant games are audited before and after the game to ensure the game is as advertised.

Hi again.. selecting all activity in the points section of your account still does not tell you home many points you have achieved in all plus it doesn't show you how many points you have spent like it use to. What it shows now is just your unspent points. The all activity selection is annoying. You have to scroll and scroll to see all your points. Man what a day for me, bought my husband 2 of the extreme millions and bought 8 of the queen of hearts. Of course, to no surprise my husband won nothing and well I only won $5 (five) dollars. Now my calculation $5 out of $100.00 is poor winnings and you know I was a mad somebody still am. That number varies so greatly, that we cannot even give a rough estimate because it wouldn't be an accurate representation so blog moderators cannot answer that question. It is important to remember that there are over 800,000 members on Lucke-Zone making entries into drawings. Some people like to go for the big prize, while others prefer smaller prizes. That's why we offer both types of drawings.

When entering tickets I have noticed that the amount of points varies. Why is this and how are the amount of points awarded determined? I.e. 2 $30 Extreme Million tickets: one yields 30 points and the other yields 50 points. NC Lottery
Great question :) For instant games, the number of points you get is assigned to the ticket itself, and varies between 1 to 10 times the ticket price.

Hello I would like to ask why did the lottery change the way players view their points in the rewards program. It use to be that you could view your total points accumulated your points that you have used and your current points available. Also have you ever had a player achieve one million rewards program points. If not do you plan to give that player a special prize. Hi there, SuperGlide. Circumstances differ depending upon the winner. This particular winner needed time to process, and we gave them a few days to do that and we would do it again if it is reasonable. The winner had children in college in another state. They were going out of town for the weekend and wanted time to tell their kids in person. The winner's wife is also a school teacher, she wanted time so she could tell her students what was going on and why she would be taking a week off.

But LZ I'm throwing the bull flag on your reply to my post yesterday where you replied "We care about our players, so we wanted to make sure they knew exactly what to expect and prepare for. We give them the same advice we give jackpot winners..." The winner bought the ticket on Thursday and claimed it on Friday, the very next day. The last couple that won $10M claimed on a Friday (August 25th) and you posted their interview the following day, a Saturday without much fanfare or a video. This was a PR scheme plain and simple and we saw through it. BTW, a second $10M Extreme Millions prize was claimed yesterday - are we going to see another PR stunt with this one?
