Raleigh man wins $100,000, plans to help Hurricane Dorian victims

Jerry Wood of Raleigh said he plans to use part of his $100,000 lottery prize to help victims of Hurricane Dorian.

“There’s a lot of people out on Ocracoke Island that still need help,” Wood said. “We were able to help a little after it first hit, but now this puts us in a position to do more.”

The construction worker’s good fortune started Tuesday afternoon when he stopped by the Quality Food Mart on South Main Street in Wake Forest on his way home from work. While there, he decided to get a $5,000,000 Mega Cash scratch-off ticket. He went to his car, and used the NC Lottery Official Mobile App to check his ticket.

“When it said it was a winner I thought, ‘Great! Maybe I won $1,000,’” Wood said. “When I scratched the front of the ticket, and saw that I won $100,000, I was in shock. I couldn’t believe it.”

Wood immediately called his wife, and they drove straight to lottery headquarters in Raleigh to claim their prize. After required state and federal tax withholdings, he took home $70,756. In addition to helping the victims of Hurricane Dorian, Wood said he plans to save for retirement.

The $20 ticket launched in May 2017 with three $5 million prizes, six $1 million prizes, and six $100,000 prizes. One $5 million prize and one $1 million prize remain.

Ticket sales from games like $5,000,000 Mega Cash make it possible for the lottery to raise more than $700 million a year for education. For details on how lottery funds have made a difference in all of North Carolina’s 100 counties, click on the “Impact” section of the lottery’s website.

@tim m. I missed out on a $1 million dollar Hit 5000 ticket back in April. My budget is $40 if I have it. I was planning to buy 4 and at the last minute, I changed my mind and bought 4 Carolina Black. Anyway, I won $200 on the third ticket. Meanwhile, a man came 15 later and bought 4 Hit 5000 and I believe the clerk said he won $5000 on one card and $1 million on the other. I'm still haunted by it ????????????

@SHEILA I, as for buying multiple tickets, that can get VERY annoying when you're in line behind someone like that. This person is often a retiree but not always. They will hold up the line while they continue to tell the clerk to give them a number this and a number that and usually more than that. It's also not unusual for the draw machine to simultaneously be tied up with their $50 or $100 or more worth of draw tickets, sometimes 50 cent tickets! When they're FINALLY through, they tuck their draw tickets and slips in their special NCEL envelopes. I wonder, how much do these players actually win? I was at the IGA o e time when this old man bought over $150 worth of draw tickets and kept buying scratch-offs out of the machine the entire time he (and everyone else) waited! He only cashed in $70 in winnings and $40 of that was a Pick 3 win. The rest was split between 2 scratch-offs if I remember correctly. So, he spent over $200 but only cashed in $70? Hmmm, what's wrong with this picture?

Denver G. The excitement of buying more than 1 ticket is you just never know if you're passing up a winner ????????

Ain't that the truth!

So he's a Wood? My wife is a Wood. HEY! Perhaps she's Jerry's long-lost cousin? I can be his brother from another mother! How 'bout spreading the love? LOL.

Congrats young man, right place at the right time !!! Just luck, that's all it ever is. My friend Tony stopped to get gas at Ingles here in WNC over the weekend, and bought one $10 loaded ticket. He won $5000. Last year he won $10,000 after he purchased just one scratcher. Buying numerous amounts of tickets does not mean you should or will win.
