Orange County man wins $4 million scratch-off prize

Rodney Emory of Hillsborough won the top prize of $4 million playing $150 Million Cash Explosion.

Emory bought the lucky $20 ticket at the Quality Mart on U.S. 70 in Hillsborough.

Emory claimed his prize Monday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. He had a choice of taking the $4 million as an annuity of $200,000 over 20 years or a lump sum of $2.4 million. He chose the lump sum and after tax withholdings took home $1,698,006.

The $150 Million Cash Explosion ticket launched in October with four top prizes of $4 million and six $1 million prizes. Two $4 million prizes and four $1 million prizes remain to be claimed.

Ticket sales from instant games like $150 Million Cash Explosion make it possible for the lottery to raise more than $650 million a year for the state. For details on how $7.9 million in lottery funds have made a difference in Orange County, visit the “Impact” section of the lottery’s website.

My question is he took the lump sum .He got 2.4 million before taxes out of the 4 million .what happen to the 1.6 million thanks for your replyNC Lottery
Great question, Alton. Nothing "happened" to the money. It's more about how lottery prizes are financed. The lottery gives players the option between the lump sum right now and the annuity paid over 20 years. The lump sum is what the lottery has set aside "right now". But, if the player chose the annuity, the lottery would take that lump sum amount and invest it, and the interest it would gain over the course of the 20 years is how it would grow from $2.6 to $4 million. At one time the lottery only offered big prizes in the annuity form, but lots of players asked for the option of a lump sum. Does that help explain things?

Congratulations! That’s a big win. If I won I would also take the lump sum. It just make sense to me. Pay whatever taxes need to be paid and move on. Enjoy your winnings. I know i have been buying those $20 and $30 tickets spending $300 to $400 at one time. The most I have won is $500. My time is coming. Congratulations again.

Check to make sure your location sharing and wireless cards are enabled. If using an mobile device you can try and deleting the app and reinstalling it and see if that resolves the issue. Hi Wanda, Winners are not double-taxed on lottery winnings. By law, we are required to withhold the minimum state and federal taxes. Depending on each individual's unique financial situation, a person's tax obligation could be more or less than what was withheld. Hi Shirley, sometimes with popular numbers, the “liability limit” is reached, meaning enough players have selected a number that the lottery must stop sales of that number for that draw. The reason for this is to ensure that the lottery could pay out the prize money should those numbers hit!

Hi Theodore, The process is actually the other way around than what you are thinking. The lump sum cash value is the starting amount and then the lottery takes that lump sum and invests it to pay the annuitized amount over time. Generally, the cash value amount is about 60% of the advertised annuity. Hope this helps!

Another lump sum. Cannot one live comfortably on 200,000 a year for the next 20 years? Myself personally can do alot with 141,000 a year after taxes. Cannot see giving up a net 1.1 million for the instant gratification of being a millionaire for a day,month or even a year. However,I would like the opportunity to decide! That is a great question, Jim! All of our current annuities are purchased through Treasury Strips, which is more secured than annuities funded by an insurance company. The NCEL currently works through the State Treasurer’s Office to acquire the Treasury Strips. Hope this answers your question!
